The Crawford County Unit of the American Cancer Society reports the 1970 cancer crusade has raised 31 044 toward a 37 000 goal. At a weekly executive committee meeting the total was announced. Local updates include flag half mast for Cpl Monte L Gates funeral at 11 am tomorrow at First United Methodist Church.
In Wallenburg, Mrs. Fred Pino frantically called a party line for aid as her three sons aged 14, 12, and 10 drowned. Laughter on the line hampered the plea and delayed rescue until it was too late. The tragedy underscores dangers of shared lines and slow emergency response.
Glennie A. Rugar 70 of 18 East First Street Waterford died after a long illness. Born September 19, 1899 in Eldred Township Warren County he is survived by Irene Vanderhoof his wife two daughters two sons 16 grandchildren 11 great grandchildren two sisters and two brothers. Funeral services will be Sunday at 2 PM at H. Richard Hays Funeral Home Spartansburg with burial in Rose Hill Cemetery.
Centre County state senator Daniel A. Bailey of Phillipsburg died at Clearfield Hospital after a two month illness. A former Centre County commissioner, Bailey held the 34th District seat and would not seek reelection. Gov. Shafer praised him as a champion of rights who served with dedication. He is survived by his wife Melba Wells.
Erie County District Attorney William E. Pfadt announces he will seek the vacant common pleas seat left by the death of Judge Thomas W. Barber. Judge Edward H. Carney plans to urge Gov. Shafer to appoint soon, with a three-names screening by the Erie County Bar Association. Pfadt aims to run for election in 1971 if appointed or not, hoping incumbency aids his bid.
In Pottstown near Kenilworth residents of Presidential Garden Apartments are forbidden to fly the American flag outside their units. The lease restricts exterior displays, though tenants may show the flag inside or in large windows. The owner and manager cited concerns about uniform displays and potential decor changes. A flagpole plan was discussed but not acted on.
