Stock dividends rise as profits lift 1958 outlook
The year shows an $200 million increase over 1958 with more shares to pay dividends amid broader stock activity. Last year 17 companies on the big board faced lawsuits, the fewest in a decade, while stock dividends climbed though total payouts fell from 164 to 135. The dividend surge mirrors profits, aiding wage talks, and roughly 10 million individuals own stocks, with 12 percent of a trillion dollars in dividends boosting buying power for investors and firms. Also noted is the death of bandleader Jimmy Grier in Glendale at 57.
