We Learn About Pioneers at Conelway School
Sixty eight second grade students at Conelway Elementary packed their classroom covered wagon for a westward mini project. Erie project score officials approved the effort led by Miss Kathleen Head Mrs Bruce Campbell and Mrs Fred Day. The class created pioneer days in a log cabin and tepee with tape recorded stories and a pioneer schoolroom. They read in the covered wagon learning stations and made quilts braided rugs sunbonnets and coonskin caps. They churned cream into butter and used pioneer songs films and books to enrich learning. The kids wore pioneer costumes for a picnic and enjoyed old foods like Johnny cake. Their room was transformed with long bench desks and a front water pail and dipper. They recited arithmetic read McGuffey and held a spelling bee and even saw a dunce cap and switches. Head’s class dramatized Johnny Appleseed with Danny Wood as Daniel Boone and David Maine as Davy Crockett while Jeff Hulings played Johnny Appleseed.
