A second Johnson amendment seeking to bar farm product tariff reductions below production cost level was defeated 40 to 46 and another Johnson proposal to bar farm product tariff changes or their processed variants was rejected 52 to 53.
Four people died and more than a dozen were injured in Pittsburgh district auto accidents this weekend. At Meadowlands a train struck a truck, killing driver Walter Louttit, hitchhikers John Spitka and Robert Gray both 16, and trackman Joseph Drumsta. A fourth hitchhiker, Joseph Drumsta, 17, survived with a fractured shoulder. Engineer W J Lepio reported warnings were light at the crossing. Police sought the hit-run car involved. Victor Batterton, 50, of Hazelwood died from a fractured skull after being struck by a car driven by Gene Orben, 21, of McDonald.

The blaze injured a dozen people and forced residents to flee. Father Wilfrid Fring suffered shock while Ed Benson and Taming OConnor were hospitalized. others received minor injuries.
Two individuals died and a third was hurt in a sequence of crashes across the week. Ralph Erickson, 21, of Mayville, married to Neva Dingfelder, died from a fractured skull and internal injuries after a high speed crash near Westfield Hill. Louis Crawford, 30, of Mayville, was critically injured with a fractured skull. The crash occurred when brakes failed to stop a light coupe going off the road and through a guard rail into a 190 foot gorge. Erickson’s wife survived. funeral services set for Mayville. A Sheffield girl, Helen Harris, 16, died and others were injured in a separate crash near Barnes Brooks Road involving a Ridgway party. The driver claimed the car hit a left abutment, overturned, and pinned Miss Harris beneath the vehicle. Coroner ruled accidental deaths in both incidents.
