Southern Baptists reject observer at Vatican II council
At the 18th annual Southern Baptist Convention in Dallas the plan to send an observer to the Vatican II council was defeated by a show of hands. About 15,052 messengers voted against the proposal, with only about 100 notes of support. The decision leaves Baptists as the last major Christian tradition without an authorized observer at the council. Some Baptist bodies favored sending an observer, including the American Baptist Convention, while the Baptist World Alliance previously declined an invitation.
