House GOP Crushes Lawrence Tax Plans
House Republicans defeated Gov. Lawrence tax proposals in a Tuesday vote citing the need to address the budget first. The record defeat involved extending the 3 percent sales tax to liquor stores and distributors, a six mill personal property tax on stocks and bonds, and raising the bank share tax to 10 mills. Only Rep. Albert Strausser voted for any tax, with two Democrats opposing some. Possible shift toward a four percent sales tax was mentioned but not confirmed.
