Crete Battles End as Germans Claim Victory
Berlin reports the Crete battle as ended with 13 000 prisoners. German forces say Sphalion harbor fell and Nez mountain troops subdued British air defenses. The 12 day Balkan campaign windup yielded about 10 000 Britons and Greeks captured, with total losses and captures rising. Turkey faces encirclement and could align with Rome and Berlin or enter a new south east battleground. Lack of air support is cited as a key factor in British Crete defeat.
