Jamestown Flying Trio Feared Lost

Three Jamestown residents vanished after a small plane disappeared en route to Florida. The missing crew includes Sandy Scarantino, 46, a UFW official. Floyd Carlson, 28, an electrician. and his wife Mae, 24. FAA opened an investigation from Cleveland. The plane, leased by Carlson, left Jamestown refueling in Jo hnstown.

Plane Crashes Near Sugar Land. Five Die

Five persons were killed when a light plane crashed shortly after takeoff from Tull Airport near Sugar Land Texas. Names of victims were not immediately learned.

Child Recovers From Poisonous Snake Bite in Corry

A 4-year-old Corry child was treated at Memorial Hospital after a bite likely from a rattlesnake. Michael Keppel, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Repipe, was bitten twice on the leg while playing near Turner Hill pasture. He received snake anti-venom and is recovering today.

Mother tries to save child as train strikes in Wrenshall

A Wrenshall mother racing to reach her 2 year old daughter was 15 feet away when a passenger train at about 60 mph struck the child by the tracks near her home. Jan Newsum, playing with a sand pail, heard her mother cry and was struck seconds after the mother leaped from a car to reach her. The engineer Carl Ostlund said he saw something ahead and applied brakes but the Northern Pacific train couldn’t stop in Wrenshall.

Five Die in Deep Cave-Ins at Sherwood Dome Mine

Five men were killed in a mining explosion and cave-in 2,200 feet underground at Sherwood dome mine in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Twenty seven workers were rescued, many injured, some seriously with burns and sulfur gas. The Tron County sheriff reported the fatalities, with a fifth death later at a hospital in nearby Stambaugh where the injured were taken.

Corry Area High School faced vandalism as windows were smeared with soap and hallways littered with waste paper. Superintendent Dr William Rodemeyer and principal Howard Sheen criticized the act as needless and disruptive, noting extensive cleanup and morale impact.

Corry Area Roads Free Of Traffic Deaths

Corry area traffic reports note three auto accidents in the Bear Lake borough and on Route 6 near the fish hatchery curve over the weekend. Teen pedestrians Marilyn Nichols and Raelen Mellons were treated for abrasions. two other drivers sustained minor injuries and were hospitalized. A fourth incident at 2:20 am left Alvin Fish and companions with facial and ankle injuries after a loss of control near the hatchery curve. About 400 dollars in vehicle damage was recorded. Police summarize further injuries in four-county area.

Lawrence Revises State Deficit Estimate Downward

Harrisburg AP The Lawrence Administration reduced its 1957-39 deficit estimate to 33 million dollars less than previously projected. The administration expects the deficit to be near the close of the two year period, with reforms and tax measures shaped to balance the 1950-81 budget. Senate leaders and House Democrats weigh the impact of the cut on sales tax exemptions and revenue plans as nine tax bills face final votes this week.

Memorial Day Highway Deaths Hit Record High

Memorial Day weekend saw a nationwide surge in traffic fatalities with 310 highway deaths and 23 drowning-related deaths in the 54 hours from Friday to Sunday. Pennsylvania logged 11 highway deaths, among the lowest for the period, while drownings affected mainly children during park and lake outings. The Associated Press tally counted 454 total accidental deaths, with drownings at 95 and miscellaneous accidents at 49, as the 368 total for the 54 hour period surpassed prior records.

Sparta Truck Stolen and Wrecked Near Mill

A log truck from the Mick and Lindstrom Lumber Company in Spartansburg was stolen and found wrecked about a mile from the mill yesterday. Police report the vehicle headed toward the lumber mill then left the road, severing a telephone pole. Damage is estimated at 250 dollars, with pole replacement costs around 100 dollars.
