Sailor Prisoner of War Captured in Atlantic Sinkings
The navy reports the first release of a U S ship captain as a prisoner of war after a German submarine sank another U S merchant ship in the western Atlantic. The Brazilian freighter Tamandare also was sunk, raising the Allied tally of submarine sinkings to 404. Survivors recalled a German commander telling the American captain to come aboard as his vessel foundered in the South Atlantic on July 9.

Nazi spearheads push 112 miles beyond Rostov and Kalach
Reports from the Caucasus describe German vanguards advancing in large columns south of Rostov and near Proletarskaya while Soviet resistance remains tenacious around Kalach. London saw arrivals of four top U.S. air officers and fresh Canadian troops, fueling talk of a possible Allied invasion of western Europe and a push toward a second front. Soviet Ambassador Matsky urged opening a second front in Parliament as air crews and tank units arrived in Britain. Also noted are local notices about Mr. William Brown’s health update and a hospital discharge for Lanston’s shopper.
