Women ordained Episcopal priests in Philadelphia
In Philadelphia at the Church of the Advocate, 11 women were ordained as Episcopal priests, the first women to reach this rank in the Western world. Bishops say the ordinations are valid though irregular, defying long standing church practice amid strong opposition from local clerics. The women, ages 27 to 79, had been serving as deacons after completing theological training, and expect disciplinary action from many home dioceses. Three inactive bishops officiated for the ordination.
