In Stevens Point Wisconsin a UW Stevens Point safety class handed out silver dollars to 32 motorists who buckled up. Those not wearing belts received a note saying thanks you just saved us a buck. The survey found 28 percent wearing belts, with women over 30 having the best record.
Eugene Withrow 26 was released after more than three weeks in Baltimore city jail on a mistaken identity case. Police believed a man who identified as Withrow was the suspect in Philadelphia burglary and pistol theft linked to a cigarette hijacking ring. A missing fingerprint check and slow coordination between Philadelphia and Baltimore delayed resolution until a Prisoners Aid counselor and a Baltimore Sun reporter prompted the release.
Three teens died in a Route 20 two car crash in Westfield New York. Deborah Biekert 17 of Mayville Anita Parker 16 of Mayville and Clark Reichard 17 of Middleport were killed. Two others David Parker 18 of Mayville and C J Valentine 27 of Westfield were hospitalized in serious condition. The coroner said all three killed were in the same car and died of fractured skulls. Valentine drove his own car and apparently turned left in front of the Parker vehicle.
