Attorney Arthur J. Hanes contends an international Communist conspiracy targets James Earl Ray. Judge W. Preston Battle set an eight-member panel to review possible publicity violations as Ray’s murder trial nears. Council Sets Special Meeting Tonight on Housing Inspector

Two young Corry men Rich ard Hornick and John Gage depart in a two passenger 1946 airplane bound for Alaska. They plan a week of flying with stops at Great Falls Edmonton Ft St John Port Nelson Watson Lake North Bay Big Delta and Anchorage. Flight plans hinge on landing for overnight rests and camp at night as they trace the Alaska Highway to reach Mike Hornick in Anchorage.

Petitioners Seek State Help For North Center Road

North Center street residents petitioned the State Highway Department to repair the stretch from Columbus avenue to the city line. Rep Forest Hopkins delivered the petition to State Secretary of Highways Robert Bartlett, who said widening to 28 feet between Route 6 and White Street is authorized and will start after Public Utility Commission approval for a rail crossing. Curbs are to be built and sections from Hare Run to Macadam Hill Road will be sealed with oil and slag within three weeks. Bartlett will receive a detailed district report on the road condition and improvement recommendations.

County Can't Give Corry Recreation Funds

Erie County faces a financial bind and will likely borrow money in September to run county machinery, forcing the suspension of the promised fourth installment of 5,000 for Corry and all other communities including Union City Waterford Wesleyville and North East from receiving recreation funds this year.

Pope Bans All Birth Control Methods Worldwide

Vatican City AP Pope Paul VI banned the contraceptive pill and all mechanical and chemical birth control for the world’s half a billion Roman Catholics. He also urged that rhythm not be used regularly and said every act of intercourse must remain open to life, rejecting many liberalization demands.

Two Planes Collide Kill in Farmingdale NY

Eight people died when two private planes collided over East Farmingdale near Beth Moses Cemetery on Long Island. A twin engine Piper Aztec crashed in flames, a single engine Piper Cherokee was demolished but did not burn. Wreckage covered a large area near the burial ground. Four aboard each plane hailed from New York state with one passenger from Connecticut. FAA said collision occurred about 8:30 p.m. at 600 to 1,000 feet during final approaches to Republic Flying Field. FAA noted Aztec left wing likely struck the Cherokee. Cherokee, owned by Flight Safety Inc., had been en route from Providence R I. Ownership of the Aztec undetermined.

Viet Cong raid hits Tuy Hoa base in Vietnam

Viet Cong infiltrators in loincloths attacked the Tuy Hoa air base on Vietnam s central coast, destroying four engine CIM transports and damaging an F100 Super Sabre. One American is wounded, nine Viet Cong were killed, and the fight marked the third base raid in three days. Reports said other bases in Thailand and Da Nang suffered damage as U.S. defenses tighten.

Showdown Time Nears in Steel Industry Talks

AP reports a potential nationwide steel strike as 388,000 workers face a possible walkout. The 11 largest producers present a long awaited wage and benefits offer, first reviewed by the USW executive committee at 1 a.m. and then by the Basic Steel Industry Conference at 2 p.m. to decide ratification or escalation.

Truck Crash Involving Horse Trailed Car Injures One

A truck hauling a horse in a trailer rear ended a stopped car on East Columbus Avenue, causing $1300 in damage and injuring one person. The driver of the stopped vehicle was Angelo Frisina, 57, from 27 West Frederick Street. Judith A. Hobman, 23, of Warren drove the truck that struck him. Police noted a second Frisina car behind the stopped vehicle and that the truck passed on the right before continuing. Continued on Page Six. Wounds Fatal To Corry Man

Corry man David K. Sanden was found dead shortly after 8 am from a self inflicted gunshot wound to the head. Deputy Coroner Olin W Bracken Jr listed the death as suicide. The incident occurred on Frontera Trail er Court about three miles west of Curry on Route 6. A .22 calibre revolver was used. Sanden was reported despondent over marital difficulties. Trooper Paul Sita is investigating.

Researcher Otto Hahn Dies at 89 in Goettingen Germany

Otto Hahn German atomic research pioneer and Nobel Prize in Chemistry winner died yesterday at age 89 in Goettingen. He and assistant demonstrated atomic fission on December 18 1938 by bombarding uranium with neutrons. he received the Nobel Prize in 1944 for that achievement.

Wants To Pay Firemen For Road Calls

Legislation sponsored by Erie County Representative Forest Hopkins would provide 25 dollars in state funds to a local volunteer fire company for responding to a motor vehicle fire on a state highway. The bill authorizes the Secretary of the State Department of Highways to contract with local volunteers to extinguish vehicle fires on state roads. Companies must submit six month service statements certified by the Pennsylvania State Headed Marine Vets.

Fire Destroys Bulldozer At Corry Home

Fire damaged a bulldozer at George Huff's home in Corry shortly before 1 am. Neighbors reported the unidentified device backfired while Huff was repairing the tractor, igniting gas and causing the blaze. Seared remains were viewed by family and sightseers.

Two car crash sends four to hospital in Mina

Two vehicles collided on Route 426 near Findley Lake Mina. Roy Lubin 20 of Erie suffered multiple bruises and lacerations and Thom as Tipping 65 of Bethel Park Pa was treated for facial and chest injuries. Miss Tipping drove south and swerved to avoid the Lubin car but was struck. Both Miss Tipping and Miss Carol Rinne 18 were treated and released.
