Medium-Grade Bonds Show Shifting Trends In 1940s Market
In the postwar bond scene medium-grade issues across industrial utility and rail sectors have rallied since 1942 but are now leveling. Utilities look strongest due to balance-sheet cleanups and election-year optimism. Second-grade rail bonds may gain on strong company positions yet face traffic declines and pricier yields. Defaulted rail bonds linger, trading well below workout values, demanding careful, brave investment.

Bond market outlook cites gradual declines in most issues
The analysis predicts a downward long-term trend for bonds except possibly certain rail bonds. Tax-exempt issues will show little change until laws shift. Low-grade rail bonds appear most vulnerable due to expected drops in rail tonnage, while long-haul transcontinental bonds remain least affected. Short-haul lines may offer better sale conditions than buying today.
