Alcatraz after 13 years still seeks best use
San Francisco AP reports on post prison plans for Alcatraz. Ideas include a national monument to justice, an Indian cultural center, a private hotel convention complex, and a casino, but the favored option remains continuing guided tours as the island sits in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. Tour revenue since 1973 totals about 1.69 million dollars with 77 percent of visitors wanting tours to continue. Park Service and a staff committee are weighing recommendations for future use.
