Palmer twines no hit bid as Orioles rout Indians

Jim Palmer fired a one hitter through eight before George Hendrick’s leadoff single in the eighth broke the bid. Baltimore exploded for a 9-0 win in the opener and 5-2 in the nightcap, closing within 1 1/2 games of the Yankees in the AL East as Kansas City won 2-1 in 10 innings. Palmer’s five hitless innings run earlier and Tommy Davis’s five RBI helped Baltimore, while KC’s late surge over Chicago and other AL results shaped a busy day across the majors. In the NL New York edged St Louis 2-1 and Houston beat Los Angeles 5-2 as Montreal, Cincinnati, and San Diego won. The day also marked Doc Palmer’s near no-hitter and Detroit’s 10th straight win versus Boston, with Kaline driving in three for 1,500 RBIs in his career. Green and Ferler led with strong rounds in the Canadian Golf Championship.
