Secretary of State John Foster Dulles assured the Baghdad pact nations the United States would act to safeguard their independence and integrity even at great risk. He spoke at the fifth Baghdad pact council in Lancaster House addressing Britain, Turkey, Pakistan, Iran and the Arab member. The speech followed U S military landings in Lebanon and noted the alliance’s future role, with questions about Sinhe Tor Whe membership.
Explorers Malcolm Ross and M. Lee Lewis survived a 2000 foot bounce on return from a record balloon flight. The 34 hour trip set a record for a manned ascent into the stratosphere, with a full atmosphere gondola and pressurized cabin. They endured a failed release, then relaunched descent, eating candies and reporting first cigarettes in a day and a half as they prepared for a November Mars ascent study.

At Edwards Air Force Base California Captain Ivor Kincheloe Jr. died in a jet crash while preparations continued for the first Air Force flight into outer space. The replacement named is Captain Robert M White a 34 year old New Yorker and engineering graduate of New York University. White joins a three man team aboard the secrecy shrouded X15 rocket plane viewed as the first step toward a manned satellite. Kincheloe 30 had spoken of his dream to be among the first orbital space pioneers and awaited orbit.
Claire Chennault the Louisiana farm boy who led the Flying Tigers in World War II is dead at seven from a massive arterial hemorrhage amid June cancer. His wife Anna Chan Chennault was present. He died nine days after an emergency bill gave him a third star. His body lies in state and a service is planned. He will lie in state in Washington then be buried at Arlington National Cemetery. Mme Chiang Kai-shek mourned the loss and noted his friendship with the Chinese people and the cause. The Japanese respected him as a top war criminal designation. The retirement followed his 1937 departure from the Army Air Corps after urging reforms. The Flying Tigers path began in China 1941 with the American Volunteer Group. Their P40s bore shark teeth and claimed many victories including hundreds of additional Japanese planes.
An 85 year old Westfield man Henry Warnshuis shot his wife Ada 51 in the head with a 22 caliber rifle then hanged himself in a woodshed on the family property. Ada Warnshuis survived after being rushed to Westfield Memorial Hospital in serious condition. Police launched a homicide and suicide investigation after finding the bodies and blood stains at the home. The incident occurred about 10 50 P M Saturday and the woman was able to reach a neighbor before collapsing. Charles C Walker 34 of St Joseph drowned while teaching his son Stephen to swim at Sugar Lake. The two were about 10 feet from shore when Walker pushed Stephen and disappeared. Divers recovered Walker about an hour later, seven feet down tangled in moss.
Beiruti dispatch reports a U.S. Marine private first class killed yesterday by an accidental discharge of a fellow Marine's .45. Officials investigate whether sniper fire or accident caused the death near Beirut airport amid Lebanon's political turmoil.
A young woman and an elderly man perished in separate Crawford County blazes. Mrs Donald Miller, 29, Mesdville, died in an explosion triggered fire likely caused by a defective gas refrigerator. Israel Stevens, 75, of Rome Township near Titusville, died in a later house fire, his body found inside the front door as firefighters battled the flames and cooled embers. The losses were placed at about $3,000 for the Miller home. the Stevens fire's cause remained undetermined, though an oil stove may have exploded.

Lawrence Jewell, 24, of Corry, was sentenced to 30 days for contempt after threatening State Policeman Ed Pass on May 1 outside Judge Samuel Rossiter’s courtroom. The remark, made during a driving-while-suspended case, led to an added 90 days tacked onto two 1 to 22 month sentences. Jewell later apologized to the judge at the courthouse.
In Scranton Pennsylvania a World War II veteran forced into the Zeshonski home in nearby Jermyn early today and shot and killed Chester Zeshonski, the husband of his sister. He then died by suicide in the basement, after police say he forced entry while the couple’s two sons and young daughter were present. Wayda Jr had a history as a mental patient at VA facilities in Valley Forge and Coatesville.
Austrian Chancellor Julius Raab concluded a week long Moscow visit with a signed accord achieving a 50 percent cut in oil reparations owed to the Soviet Union. The agreement marks a significant easing of postwar economic obligations and strengthens Cold War era economic ties between Vienna and Moscow.

Seven year old Mike Donoghue while fishing at an urban park pond snagged a large turtle that had devoured several ducks. He turned the creature over to park caretaker Clifford Long for disposition. The boy is the son of Mr and Mrs Bernard Donoghue of Marion Street.
