Negro regiment to be disbanded amid end of segregation
Washington reports the 24th Infantry Regiment, the Army's oldest black unit, will be disbanded as segregation ends in the Far East command. The move comes with a plan to end interracial troops in Japan, Korea, and Okinawa within six months, a change limited to that theater. The 24th, formed at Fort McKavitt in 1869, saw action in frontier campaigns and in the Spanish American War.
