Plutonium-238 Powers New Pacemakers
America’s first human implantations of nuclear powered cardiac pacemakers were performed at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Buffalo New York. Two World War II veterans with chronic heart block received four ounce devices about two thirds the size of a cigarette pack. The implants on July 18 and 19 are expected to last at least 10 years without replacement, a stark contrast to 18 months to two years for conventional models. Nuclear pacemakers cost projected under $3000 commercially, with AEC scientists optimistic. Each patient had worn conventional devices for years and agreed to a nuclear alternative after being fully informed.
