Democrats of County Split Over Chairman
WRIB July 24. The county Democratic committee is divided with two factions active. James F. Lavery, elected chairman a month ago to succeed Joseph M. Schilling, is asked to resign for the good of the party, with a $500 payment and a $200 monthly job in Harrisburg. John F. Collins, state chairman, rushed from Hamtnishune after two Lavery executive committeemen conferred with him. The plan to force Lavery out was said to have been proposed at the Lawrence Hotel. A courthouse meeting Tuesday discussed the plan, Lavery spoke and the committee adopted a resolution expressing satisfaction with the new chairman. Collins remained at the Lawrence hotel awaiting Lavery’s resignation. It was clear the state leader intends to organize his own slate for the November election. Two organizations in the county disrupt party harmony. Lavery’s actions have not met full approval of all members.
