Society Needs To Take More Chances In Mental Health
Albany AP reports sociologists Henry J. Steadman and Joseph J. Cocozza urge reducing psychiatric control over the criminally insane. They say fear, not logic, guides treatment and that centralized hospitals should be abandoned in favor of local civil facilities. They advocate a multi field board for commitment decisions and note judges tend to follow psychiatrists. Their work traces patients through mental health and justice systems and cites the 1966 Supreme Court transfer of dangerous patients to civil hospitals.

The governor and Senate indicated no quick action on malpractice legislation. The commission may extend a rate suspension to all 4,000 Argonaut physicians if granted.
