Union Chief Freed Dems Get Funds
In New York the Democratic party reportedly received about 100,000 in donations from the Seafarers Union after Secretary of State Dean Rusk refused to extradite Harold C Banks, a former Seafarers leader sought in Canada. The funds arrived without Rusk's knowledge, and he said no political pressure influenced his decision. Banks had previously faced prison for scheming to assault a rival union official and fled to the United States after jumping bail.

A 26 year old Erie County woman asks to change her surname to Smith while pregnant to present the baby as illegitimate child of a Mr Joseph Smith rather than from an unmarried union. Attorney John R Wingerter says the petitioner has never been married to any Smith and a court hearing was scheduled for August 22 as the first such petition in the county prothonotary office.
