A student nurse testified before a coroner's jury that she administered a fatal overdose of paraldehyde to George A. Schwab Jr. at St Luke's Hospital. Schwab, a 45 year old Brentwood, Tennessee horse trainer, had been a patient for 10 years under Dr Francis J. Gerty who prescribed three drams of paraldehyde. The nurse misread a symbol, thinking 32 meant 3 ounces, about eight. Edith Payne, nurse supervisor, said McElroy is competent. Autopsy pending.
City Council announces the first annual street resurfacing will cover the southern portion of First Avenue from the Pennsylvania Railroad tracks to West Pleasant Street. Funding limits limit the scope for now. remaining sections to be tackled later. Streets director Capwell urges leveling the West Side to the standard grade and possible savings from early fillings. Mayor Kinnley moves to bring the section to grade with the rest and bid the remainder.
Philadelphia baseball reports Mayo Smith was fired as manager of the Phillies and Eddie Sawyer, who piloted the club to the 1950 pennant, has been signed to take over.
London reports Britain and the United States have agreed to propose a summit meeting with Soviet Premier Khrushchev at the United Nations in New York possibly within a week. The reporters name the American Broadcasting Co. as the source for the London dispatch.
Foreign Secretary Selwyn Lloyd told the House of Commons Britain is ready to attend a UN Security Council summit on the Middle East. He said the meeting would be for discussions, not a decision. The Prime Minister has authorized him to say he would attend if such a meeting is agreed.
Karen Lee Gordon, a six year old born without an esophagus, tasted mashed potatoes noodles fruit and meat after her seventh operation at St Marys Hospital Til. Doctors replaced the esophagus with a segment of her intestine enabling direct eating for the first time in years. She went home celebrating with cake and ice cream as the family entered a new era of meals.
City council set to hear complaints or suggestions on proposed street ordination at the August 18 council session. A full street list will be published beforehand. Other items include Lutheran Church tax exemption denial for property on Exist South street and a note on a Maple Avenue light paid by the city.
