Site selection for new eastern prison within two weeks

Sanford Bates, head of federal prisons, said a site for the eastern district prison may be chosen within two weeks and a report due by August 1. Five to six sites from more than 100 bids are under consideration, with western Pennsylvania and eastern state locations most likely. Congress has already appropriated 1.7 million of the 4 million total cost.

London July 22 Bishop Jamey Cannon Jr of the Methodist Episcopal Church South wed the former Mrs Helen McCallum of New York in a secret ceremony. The couple, en route to Madeira for their honeymoon, plan to travel to Brazil where he will resume his mission directing duties in the Brazilian field.

Martinsburg Father Admits Slaying Three Children

Martinsburg West Virginia July 22 claiming he and his wife could not support them Taylor Hatt confessed to killing his three children Gertrude seven Calvin six and Floyd five. He told police after hours of grilling that he led the children to an abandoned quarry under the pretense of wading and tied cloth to stop their cries then tossed them into the water filled pit.

Attempted Escape Foiled By Police In Detroit Chase

James Amiels, 27, of Washington, D C, on the way to Detroit for a theft trial, tried to flee a Detroit detective last night. He burst from a restaurant with eight patrolmen and bystanders pursuing him. Amiels, said to be a former police officer, was captured and jailed for the night.

Fourth Ward Man Injured South of City

Francis Jewell of 584 West Church Street employed by Baldwin Construction Company on Spartansburg road project toppled from a mixing machine and truck his head on a road roller south of the city around 4:30 pm Monday. He was taken to Corry Hospital with a possible skull fracture and serious injuries to his left ear. X rays were taken to determine head injury extent while recovery was anticipated.

Mount Gretna Hosts Pennsylvania National Guard Encampment

At Mount Gretna Camp in Pennsylvania on July 22, soldiers train through close order drill recruit school and lectures as preparing for the annual encampment. Major General Wm B Ryerson toured the site praising the Guard air service and noting the high quality of US Guard planes and pilots. A divisional review followed, with units from across the state, while forest fires nearby strained water supplies and demanded heavy effort from several companies over the weekend.

Globe trotter Frank Fielding rides again after 2450 mile trek

In Clarksburg West Virginia on July 22 police report Frank Fielding, famed globe trotter, finally accepted a ride after traveling 2450 miles by skating and walking without transport. He was arrested for lashing out at a sidewalk wall, reprimanded, and released. Fielding is one of three survivors from an 800 person expedition that began in Los Angeles in 1928 to skate and walk around the world.

Baker Sentenced to Erie County Jail for Fraudulent Checks

Harold L. Bakers past sentences for similar operations are noted as he pleads guilty to passing worthless checks. Judge William E. Hirt imposes a four month Erie County jail term plus a fine of 26 dollars and costs, with four months to be served there before remaining authorities may claim him. Four Miners Stabbed in Cheswick Free-for-All Fight

Four miners were cut and stabbed in a free-for-all fight in Cheswick near Pittsburgh. Michael Gurnich, 68, was critically wounded with abdomen and arm wounds during a dispute over a taxicab bill. John Keney, 27, Steve Knibanke, 42, both of Wildwood, were treated at Allegheny General Hospital. A third unidentified man was also treated. County detectives are investigating.

Mail flier killed in crash near Lake Erie

Pilot William F. Martin, air mail flyer for Thompson Aeronautical Corporation, died when his plane crashed on lakeshore near Lake Erie Huron. He was en route Cleveland to Detroit and Bay City, Michigan, leaving Cleveland at 3:00 a.m. The cause is undetermined. First fatal Thompson air mail crash on Amphitron line. Residents heard a noise around 4:30 a.m., saw wreckage later. Martin’s body found entangled in the wreckage. mail undisturbed. He lived in Pontiac, Michigan.

Clinic to Examine All Preschoolers Citywide Tomorrow and Thursday

The free clinic at the Municipal building will examine preschool children from all city districts tomorrow and Thursday, with hours 9am to noon and 1pm to 5pm. Superintendent Dewey announced that non attending children may also be seen, as the four day event ends Thursday. Woman Dies After Heat Prostration In Car Ride

In Franklin Pennsylvania yesterday Mrs Celestial Manson Cutchall aged 79 died of heat prostration while riding in an automobile with her son the first heat death in the district this season. In Portage Pennsylvania a two year old named Joseph Pelva drowned yesterday after falling into a small creek while playing with other children at the stream.
