Seven Nations Arrange to Pay World War Debt
SEVEN NATIONS ARRANGE TO PAY WORLD WAR DEBT SWAMPSCOTT, Mass July 22 Negotiations for the $7 600 000000 in World War debts owed to the United States by seven nations will begin in Washington next month handled entirely by the American Debt Funding Commission headed by Secretary Mellon President Coolidge whose designer to the debtor nations caused the conservative movement toward payment but directed the commission to wake settlements which seem just had he will not hotkey with the details of negotiations it was learned. The basis of all the negotiations will be the debtors ability to pay based on economic conditions. The President refuses to discuss the report that the Belgians who are to start the first debt payments in Washington August 1 will ask for virtual qualification of no part of their obligations. It is not believed however that the American government expects to find much evidence to support the reported claim of the Belgians that President Wilson promised them virtual nullification of part of their debt during the Versailles treaty. The Chinese situation has been placed in the hands of Secretary Kellogg and the President will not be sailed on to take part in handling this problem unless a crisis arises again. Secretary Kellogg's return to St Paul has been indefinitely postponed by the move by this government to hold immediately the Chinese question as provided by the Washington arms conference. The President planned to discard government cares personally this afternoon cruise on the yacht Mayflower to Pembroke, on the south shore of Massachusetts bay, Mr Coolidge and his son will accompany the President. The smaller cottage at Pembroke where the soldiers lived in 1919 and other points there will be visited. The trip will not start until afternoon.
