Washington AP reports House and Senate conferees reached a historic agreement on a comprehensive medical care program for Americans aged 65 and older. Secretary McNamara returned from Vietnam declaring the Viet Cong to government force ratio of about 165000 to 600000 is totally unacceptable and should prompt a recommendation to President Johnson for increased U S strength in South Vietnam. Gerald Mulcahy an 18 year old Wall Street messenger says two men robbed him of a negotiable stock certificate and his empty wallet. The securities owned by a brokerage house were immediately blocked by a stop order. The NYSE notes the certificates are negotiable but unlikely to aid the thieves. Mulcahy from Hoboken was delivering stocks to the Bank of Nova Scotia as collateral for a margin loan.
Addis Ababa launches search by Ethiopian troops for Cpl Ronald Dolecki of Oil City and two companions missing since June 6 near the Sudan border. Warrant Officer Jack J Kolmbach and an Ethiopian interpreter vanished after a heliocopter mapping mission. wreckage found near Keren Eritrea with fears of capture by bandits. Paratroopers and two infantry battalions participate in the hunt.
Republic Pa AP Miss Wilma Eperjesi 38 held on murder charges after admitting she closed the door of an unused refrigerator trapping two boys Florian Eperjesi 10 and James Maticci both of Republic in the basement unit. Bodies found five hours after parents reported a missing child during three days of questioning. Police said she called her brother in Trenton NJ and told him what she had done. Medal to be given Philadelphia The Frank J Institute will present William J Anders Levitt with its Frank P Brown Medal on October 30th.
Harrisburg RP initial reactions mix as Republicans unveil a tentative Senate apportionment plan. The Keller plan uses 1960 census figures to redraw 50 districts, adding a ninth Philadelphia senator and shifting boundaries. Several Republican incumbents could lose seats. only Democrat Hall would be affected. The plan is nonfinal with bipartisan discussions expected next week and August deadlines looming for final bills.
Hollywood mourns songwriter Ted Snyder age 4. The composer of such hits as The Sheik of Araby and Who's Sorry Now died Friday following abdominal surgery. His early work shaped early 20th century popular music with stage and film connections.
Assessments vary as six districts join Corry area into a merged district with Union City and Sparta. Boundary lines dissolve across Concord, Corry City, Elgin, Columbus, Spring Creek, Wayne townships. Sparta unchanged. State legislature and Supreme Court support the merger. Washington AP National Guard officials plan to use volunteers to meet rising troop and cargo air transport needs during a potential Viet Nam buildup. Air Force officials say as many as 20 000 guardsmen and reservists could be called for transport roles, with guard crews flying soldiers and materiel to the Far East and freeing MATS planes for Viet Nam airlift. Guard units have 25 heavy transport squadrons and about 200 aircraft, already overseas missions increased to about 130 monthly, including flights to Okinawa and the Philippines.
Guam based BS 2 jets bombed Viet Cong installations 30 miles north northwest of Saigon in a raid asked by the Vietnamese government as part of ongoing harassment. Officials reported heavy weekly casualties on both sides with Viet Cong losses at 419 killed and 28 captured.
In Harrisburg a resolution to ratify a proposed amendment establishing a presidential disability line of succession faced a final Senate vote. The amendment would become the 25th Amendment if 38 states approve, with Oklahoma Wisconsin and Nebraska already backing. Colorado rejected. The plan would let the vice president assume presidency on incapacity and allow appointment of a new vice president with majority congressional confirmation.
