Gold reserves and dollar outflows weaken U.S. balance
The article notes a favorable balance last year of 4.3 billion from exports over imports, but losses elsewhere created a 22 billion deficit. Dollar outflows include private and government investment, foreign aid, tourism, and military spending, with central banks converting dollars to gold. Gold holdings fell from over 23 billion in 1952 to under 15.7 billion today, with about 12 billion legally backing currency and the rest as free gold. The ongoing dollar assets abroad and a growing pile of gold reserves influence the dollar and gold markets.
