House Vote On Minimum Pay Bill In House Today
Washington a confident Democratic effort moved a bill to raise the federal minimum wage from 7.5 cents to $1 an hour. House leaders aimed for quick passage before night, sending the measure back to the Senate to resolve a minor difference after the Senate already approved the $1 figure. President Eisenhower had suggested 90 cents. The wage would affect about 4 million workers in interstate commerce. About 9,100 workers in the South would get automatic raises under the bill.Administration allies faced opposition on the 90-cent figure and Southern Democratic resistance, while organized labor pressed for $1.25. No clear signs of a House floor shift surfaced in the report.
