Washington July 18 The administration backs its foreign trade stance defending a $40 million deal with the Soviet government as shrewd bargaining. Roosevelt and the State Department seek equal treatment for American goods in world markets amid Germany’s move to end its treaty with the United States. The tariff clause offering bargaining benefits to all nations except those discriminating against American goods remains a potential US leverage.
Venango County in 1944 set a four year record with 89 plants across 50 industries, employing 4,998 workers who produced products valued at 81,383,000. This compares to 1933 figures of 24,803,000 by 4,622 workers at 98 plants. gasoline output powered a large mileage equivalent.
Philadelphia July 18 Qimt Reve president of the American Federation of Hosiery Workers presented a poll of 200 delegates at the convention to decide if the union would fullly back a general strike. The survey followed a heated debate on a resolution to mobilize up to 60 000 members to enforce a 40 hour work week.
From Corry hospital reports this afternoon show little change in the condition of John A. Schaub of 201 South Center street who has been troubled by a persistent hiccough since Sunday. The well known resident is resting fairly comfortably though the hiccoughs have lessened his strength. Hope grows that the ongoing treatment will soon end his distress.
July 18 a discharge of Cyrus C. Cain from the Erie federal Eliteemployment Service office was announced by Ralph M. Bushore state secretary of labor and industry. William Franklin of Erie was expected to be named his successor in the Erie post.
Corry prepares for a large pet parade on Thursday July 25 under the Federal Emergency Education Relief program. About five hundred children and their pets are expected, with music by the junior bugle and drum corps from the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. Prizes will be awarded in various classes. Routes form Concord school playgrounds west to Center then north to the disband point.
Extra squads of armed deputies were organized today to guard the courtroom when Gerald Thompson goes on trial for the brutal sex slaying of Mildred Hallmark. State's Attorney Champion said he would seek the death penalty for Thompson, a 25 year old factory worker by day and feared by many as a sex sadist.

Total emergency appropriations reach 8.08 billion, leaving unextended funds of about 8.01 billion for ongoing relief and recovery.
