County weighs central tax office to lift municipal commissions

Erie County considers a plan to collect all county taxes in a single bureau at the Erie County Courthouse. Budget Coordinator Joseph Schmitt and Controller A J Gehrlein say it could save about 100000 dollars yearly by eliminating commissions for 40 municipal collectors. Current costs total about 120000 dollars to collect county taxes in two townships 16 boroughs and the cities of Erie and Corry plus 10000 dollars in material and supplies and 5000 dollars for expenses and 3000 dollars for bonds. To run the bureau the county may hire three to five full time workers with initial costs possibly under 82000 dollars, yet savings exceed costs.
