Wheat Farmers Vote On Quota Referendum In 1957
Harrisburg Pennsylvania wheat producers will vote Friday in the fourth national referendum to decide if marketing quotas will be set for the 1957 crop. The referendum, called by the U S Agriculture secretary, follows abnormally large wheat supplies and would determine price supports and penalties for excess production. Pennsylvania’s about 17 000 eligible growers are expected to vote against quotas as in prior referendums. To vote a producer must have more than one acre in 1957. Quotas require more than two thirds national approval. If approved, producers within allotments receive 75 to 90 percent parity price support. penalties apply for excess. If rejected, price support would be 50 percent parity with no penalties. Allotments have been set by the department.
