Among the saddest deformities at birth are harelip and cleft palate. Such deformities are doubtless hereditary in origin. Problems arise as affected infants cannot suck properly and have swallowing difficulties. Feeding by dropper and spoon with the head tilted back allows nourishment. By age two the child may talk with difficult, nasal speech. Harelip and cleft palate often lead to social shunning and stunted personalities. Repair of the lip occurs in the first weeks. palate repair is usually between 18 months and two years.
