A blaze at the Shreve Chair Company plant in Union City destroyed the West wing, threatening the entire facility. Estimated loss set at 150000 with some insurance. Firefighters from Union City, Corry, and nearby departments fought the flames as oily rags and accumulated debris fed the blast. The three-story concrete structure housed storage and finishing rooms and contained thousands of chairs and stock. Pittsburgh, July 17. A 15 cents per barrel increase in Pennsylvania crude oils was announced today by the South Penn Oil Company and the Tidewater Pipe Lines Ltd. Prices paid by purchasing agencies in the area rose to 1.62 a barrel for South Penn, 1.47 for Gulf Refining Pipe Lines, 1.82 for Buckeye Pipe Lines, and 1.85 for Tidewater New York Transit and National Pipelines.
Three thousand seamless hosiery workers and furniture operatives began a strike in High Point demanding a 25 percent wage increase shorter hours and abolition of the piecework system. The walkout affected half the furniture workers while the full fashioned hosiery workers did not join.
New York July 17 Joseph W Harriman former head of Whitman National Bank disappeared from the Regent Nursing Home just as his attorney entered to discuss the sanity case. Authorities notified US attorney George Medally and DOJ official Thomas Cullen. Harriman had been due to stand trial in federal court for 14 false book entries before fleeing to Long Island.
Harrisburg July 17 Charlotte E. Carr was named secretary of labor and industry for Pennsylvania by Governor Gifford Pinchot. Elevating from head of the inspection bureau, she succeeds Dr A M Northup, ousted after resigning effective August 1. Carr is the state’s first woman cabinet officer. the post pays $10 000 annually.
Aja July 17 Ilesse Patterson, a Black man, confessed to fatally harming his former employers Vis and Mra Hugh Creety with an ax. He admitted placing their bodies in a prepared grave on their farm near Columbus Minnesota, according to police.
In Pottsburgh on July 17 the American Steels and Wire Company Pittsburgh offices announced a wage raise to align with the code. The plan adds 40 cents an hour for common laborers and a 19 percent raise for other workers, boosting overall earnings and potentially affecting production costs.
United Press reports in Berlin that the shattered wreckage of three planes and two bottles lay near Seidin, Pomerania, marking another tragedy in trans Atlantic flight. Authorities identified the bodies of Stephen Darius and Stanley Girenag, Lithuanians from New York, who left Saturday morning for Kaunas, Lithuania. Alton Illinois July 17 discovery of a cold concrete underground cell led investigators to believe they were close to catching the Abductors of Abner Luer, a 71 year old retired financier. Sheriff Peter Fitzgerald said a sub cellar behind a home near Collinsville matched Luer's description of where he was held for five days. Conflicting reports said no ransom was paid while others claimed $10 000. Notes earlier demanded between $50 000 and $100 000. Authorities said they would focus searches in and around Collinsville.
Washington July 17 President Roosevelt is suffering from a slight cold and will not go to the executive offices. He will work from his study and rest his calling list while focusing on important public works projects. He caught the cold during a weekend yachting trip on Chesapeake Bay.
District Supreme Govt Justice James M Proctor dismissed the $220,000,000 suit of David A. Olson against Andrew W. Mellon and others over claims that 1927 actions allowed foreign steamship lines to illegally defraud the U S government of income taxes. Olson sought double damages under a 1910 statute. Defendants’ demurrers were upheld as baseless.

Los Angeles notes Dr. Hutton, husband of evangelist Almae Semple, plans divorce suit against Pierson Hutton citing mental cruelty.
