Beecher W. Stevens a soldier from Jackson Michigan faced a court martial for desertion when he hanged himself with a cord from a window shade in the Fort Wayne post hospital. Coroner Rothacher ruled it a suicide. Stevens enlisted in the U S Army and served in the undecided cavalry. He deserted from Columbus barracks on June 18 and was captured by Jackson civil authorities in July before being brought to Fort Wayne for disposition.
