Lake City Boy Drowns In Area Drainage Pool

Richard Kovaly, 10, drowns in a five acre private drainage pond near Lake City after diving from a Taft diving board. His siblings and friends watched as he disappeared beneath murky, weed-filled water. Police say a cramp or struggle led to the drowning, with the body recovered after about an hour and a verdict of accidental drowning expected. The pond serves drainage on a tree nursery property owned by the Hetz family. Also reported: composer Franklin Wing Riker, 82, dies in Statesville after a career as a concert artist and educator.
