Corry area spared heavy damage after midnight thunderstorm

A late night thunderstorm swept through Corry and surrounding towns with Pen Fork Erie utility crews racing to repair wires and transformers. The storm caused heavy damage in Girard Fairview Alton Springfield Platea Borough and Lake City while Corry reported no unusual damage. Two buses west of Corry were blown out by lightning and replaced. Union City saw one power outage from a fallen limb and a few street lights out. North East reported strong winds but no major damage beyond carnival tents blown down. Weather officials cited a frontal low pressure system over Erie moving east-southeast with winds peaking near 43 mph. General Telephone reported only minor damage to telephone rings.

Carter picks Mondale as VP at Democratic Convention

AP reports Democratic nominee Jimmy Carter will name Walter Mondale as his running mate with delegates to ratify the choice at the convention closing session in New York. Carter praised Mondale as compatible and capable to lead if needed after Carter announced his decision following interviews with seven candidates. Mondale, seen as liberal with labor backing, joined Carter at the Americana Hotel as the process moved toward formal acceptance.

A federal appeals court denied a rehearing by six Corry Pennsylvania men who were convicted of conspiring to import four tons of marijuana aboard the sailboat Rogona. Penelec Applies New Higher Rate Nationwide

Penelec will raise bills due July 7 after the Public Utility Commission approved the rate increase retroactive to July 10, 1975. The $14.9 million revenue boost is split about $9.5 million from residential customers and the rest from commercial and other users. The average bill rises 9.1 percent or $2.08 monthly. The retroactive amount will be billed as an amended payment over six months with an option to pay in full at any time.

Hitchhiker Robs Car After Ride Near Corry

Corry man George Valletti 48 of 440 Wayne street picked up a young male hitchhiker on Route 6 at 2 45 am. The passenger forced Valletti to a gravel pit then fled as troopers chased the stolen car toward Union City. The driver, described as about 22, 5 feet 9 inches, 140 pounds with long blond hair, wearing a white pullover jersey and blue jeans, eluded capture as bloodhounds searched the area.

Heart Drive Surpasses Last Year Despite Short of Goal

John Daglian, chairman of the 1975-76 Heart Fund Drive, announced the results noting a total of 95,058 though the 45,500 goal was not met. He credited exceedances in employe groups and unions, Heart Sunday, and special events, and thanked volunteers and contributors for the fund.
