Mellon Bank Sees U S Economy as Confused and Optimistic

Mellon Bank reports cautious optimism for the next 18 months amid a confused economy. It cites strong consumer demand for big items except cars, rising personal income, and inflation pressures. Housing starts look weak with permits at seven-year lows, while deposits flee to higher interest, limiting mortgage funds. Inflation remains the key issue with CPI projected near 10 percent in 1974 and 7.5 percent in 1975. a slower but hopeful path depends on savings flow and rate cuts.
