Corn and the Dinner Table in 1947 Outlook
The 1947 corn crop is expected to be one fifth smaller than last year’s record, due to heavy spring rains and floods delaying planting until June. If conditions hold, autumn harvest may approach the 1990-45 average. Corn dominates crop value and volume, mainly used for animal feed, with little nonfarm human use. Hog-corn price relationship shifts as corn prices rise, with farm prices potentially tying or surpassing July’s record. Past droughts and price spikes show how corn yields influence meat costs in following years.
