Prepared For Stepped Up Race Protests In Bogalusa
Civil rights groups planned larger demonstrations in Bogalusa after the governor rejected a 30 day truce. Gov McKeithen flew in from Baton Rouge to meet the Bogalusa Civic and Voters League board and ordered state troopers to seize public safety items at demonstrations. Militants on both sides kept items in cars nearby. A white man was seriously hurt last week in a protest confrontation. The League is backed by CORE and the Deacons of Defense and Justice, while segregationists include a noted extremist group strong in the southeast.
