Mitchell testimony highlights Nixon reelection pressure
Former attorney general John N. Mitchell told the Senate Watergate committee that preserving Nixon's 1972 victory justified nearly any action short of treason. He described aiding the cover up to shield the president and asserted a June 1972 decision that Nixon should be protected from knowledge of related wrongdoing. Mitchell also recalled predicting McGovern would be the Democratic nominee and voters would reject him.
