Plants May Be Cause of Farm Animals Death
Harrisburg July 12 The mysterious death of farm animals in summer is often caused by poisonous plants in pastures and woodlands says Dr E M Gress botanist with the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture. Water hemlock wild black cherry white snake root and bracken fern are among the main culprits with July to early September the peak poisoning period. Livestock may be poisoned by eating plants or drinking water from troughs containing crushed plant roots. Water hemlock is identified by a swollen rootstock and hollow stem reaching eight feet with narrow toothed leaves and carrot like flowers. White snake-root is poisonous when leaves are eaten fresh or wilted. Common black locust rarely causes trouble but cases exist from eating bark. Bracken fern is especially poisonous in Pennsylvania. These dangers persist yearly despite authorities warning the public.
