Directors announced races will be held as scheduled despite opposition. A public meeting was set for Wednesday at Lyric Theater to hear views from supporters and opponents and decide on pool betting.
United Press reports Berlin claims further gains near Souchez as forces seize part of the French trenches and occupy the fortified inn and Red Cabaret commanding the Bouchex sugar refinery road after a three week battle. both sides report heavy fighting and unclear casualties.
In Sofia on July 19 Dr Chenadiev and Miloua Asastivion a social figure were arrested charged with plotting to assassinate King Ferdinand at the Canino. Two Bulgarians were executed earlier for bomb plotting, the husband of the arrested woman among them, and authorities claim evidence linking both the physicians and the society woman. The sensational case caused a great public stir.
A United Press dispatch from London reports a push by aviation experts and officials to build thousands of airplanes to win the war from the air. Leaders including H. G. Wells and others advocate massive production to raid German plant of war and aim to paralyze industry along the Rhine and Meuse.
Word of the death of Prof Holmes, a renowned mine safety expert and founder of the safety movement, reached Washington from Denver today. He was a leading figure in the Federal Bureau of Mines. W. Murray departed for a business trip to Chicago and Grand Rapids, returning about the latter part of the week.
New York July 13 Harry Thaw today nears the end of his nine year bid for freedom. The court and 18 attorneys weigh the day’s proceedings as the state proposes two morning alternates. Witnesses include Dr Keote head of Matteawan and Dr Baker with other officials testifying. Thaw’s attorney claims payments to experts exceed $9000 for work since hearings. The central question remains the jury verdict and possible disposition by Justices Hoodrick or the court, with spectators peering as Thaw faces hypnosis questions in court.
London reports Chancellor McKenna announced to the House that war loan subscriptions have reached 2.776 billion, with initial pledges over 100 pounds already recorded and smaller contributions now beginning. The government also moved to accelerate munition production amid a proclamation on strikes in South Wales coal districts.
French airmen conducted a large raid on German positions around Vignoulles and Hattenchatel, dropping 111 bombs. Several fires started and ammunition dumps were believed destroyed. No losses or damaged aircraft reported in the report.
Washington dispatch reports the State Department received patches confirming General Villa’s victory at Barrotonm where Convention forces under Hornufex defeated a large Cirranzista force, leaving Villa in control. London July 13 A British official summary states Allies will not consent to transferring belligerent ships to American registry to carry contraband to Belgium or other allies. The opinion reflects officials skeptical of any plan in line with the London Armistice terms and doubts Germany would accept such terms.
Washington July 18 The President is expected to travel back to the capital later this week. Secretary Maninkey offered unclear remarks suggesting a possible yes but the information seemed tentative and the briefing appeared imperfect.
A petit larceny case before Judge Barker involved M. F. Nelson accused by Mrs. Beccy Coons of taking her horse and note in payment, selling the animal to a band of gypsies along the creek for ten dollars. Nelson was arrested for drunken and disorderly conduct. bond set for settlement by March. The gypsies pursued Nelson, and the outcome remains unsettled.
