15 Charged With Prison Brutality in Arkansas
A federal grand jury in Little Rock returned 46 indictments charging 15 people with brutal treatment of inmates across four Arkansas penal institutions from 1964 to 1966. Former Tucker Prison Farm superintendent Jim Bruton appears in 19 indictments alleging punishment by electrical shocks and whippings. Additional indictments target Cummins Prison Farm officials tied to a 1967 sit-down strike incident in which guards fired birdshot, wounding 24 inmates. Gov. Rockefeller praised federal action after 30 months of administration efforts.
