President and McNutt Join in 1940 Politics
Washington July 13 The political mystery surrounding the 1940 Democratic nomination clears as President Roosevelt and Paul V McNutt Indiana appear unlikely to settle on a shared plan. McNutt likely will be confirmed as director of the Federal Security Administration and says he will not seek the 1940 nomination if Roosevelt wants it. Roosevelt remains noncommittal on candidacy and successor roles, offering few public clues as to plans. The campaign interlude centers on Frank McHue’s push for McNutt’s 1940 bid and Roosevelt’s stance on press coverage of the issue.
