Hollywood AP report says a brushfire, possibly arson, scorched 1,000 acres in Laurel Canyon destroying 28 homes and damaging 15 more. About 300 people evacuated, seven women injured, a resident and son burned, a car set ablaze as flames surged along two Laurel Canyon sites.
Seven year old Joseph Kirsch of Masury Ohio visiting grandparents in Erie was struck by an eastbound car at a wide intersection and died at Hamot Hospital. Witnesses say he ran from southeast to northwest across the intersection as Wilfred George 48 Erie drove about 20 to 25 mph. No charges filed. police and coroner continue investigation. autopsy not planned. Coroner pending police findings.
Two residents of Corry were hurt in a late evening two vehicle crash along Route 89 north of Titusville. Glenn King suffered chest injuries and was admitted. Allin Foote received multiple contusions and lacerations and was released.
In Eclectic Alabama banker Carl Ray Barker 31 killed one bandit with a shotgun blast at point blank range after subduing another with scalding water and a pistol beat. He wounded a second Montgomery man and the dead holdup man Bray was identified by wallet papers. Police officer Taunter and Barker’s family were taken hostage during the robbery. The other assailant Hayward was wounded and jailed. The story continues on page two.
Shirley Voellers, 14, admitted she led her father Julius Voellers, 44, in a chair bound with rope and blindfolded him before shooting him with a 22 caliber rifle. She said the act was a game to see how quickly he could free himself, but planned the murder because he was mean to her and her sisters. He drove to a neighbor’s home after being wounded, dying at a hospital in Little Putts. Deputies found Shirley in a field and took her two sisters, aged 10 and 11, into protective custody. A 17-year-old brother was not at home.
Three Democratic senators defended Lyndon B. Johnson as they criticized National Chairman Paul Butler for TV attacks on party leaders. Sen. Sparkman Jackson and McGee urged restraint and emphasized enacting needed legislation over political gambits.
Five year old David Silva of Springboro suffered a partial foot injury in a lawn mower accident at his home last night. He was taken to City Hospital for surgery and reported in satisfactory condition. The incident occurred around 7 p.m. when the boy, playing on a knoll, slid into the mower as it passed.

In Corry near Route 6, two youths Diane Vankops and Keith Hawley, both 18, were jailed in default of $25 fines after throwing beer bottles from a car toward the Coty State Police barracks. They were observed around midnight by a witness and police after Wielare Fest. Each faced $25 fines and $5 costs. Vankops charged with throwing missiles on the highway and Hawley with slowing the violation.

An unmanned F100 jet booster failed to reach flight speed during vertical launch tests at Holloman AFB New Mexico. The propellant rocket detached and exploded above the launch tower, damaging it. Harold Well, a 69 year old man of 205 East Smith Street, was arrested on a charge of sexually attacking his 1 year old daughter. Police took him into custody at about 8 30 this morning at a North Century Street business where he works as a janitor. At an arraignment before Alderman Porter Auer he pleaded not guilty and requested an attorney. He remains jailed with bail to be posted by this afternoon or he will be sent to the Erie County Jail. A hearing date will be set later.
County commissioners rejected paying a $200 bill submitted by Assessor Mus? Sue County for assessment work on 25 parcels. Assessor Martin Gregor argued the fee should be about $50. Lawson demanded full payment, prompting a potential court confrontation over the disputed charge.
The Pennsylvania Bureau of Employment Security reported 45,109 new unemployment claims for the week ending July 3, up 21,975 from the prior week. Officials attributed most of the rise to seasonal shutdowns in apparel and mining, while continued claims stood at 16190, slightly lower than the prior week.
