Defends Reshuffle of Homeward Bound Troops
AP reports Lt. Col. Peter B. Petersen commander of the first U.S. troop unit withdrawn from Vietnam defends swapping 650 personnel from other battalions for the homeward trip. The 3rd Battalion 60th Infantry of the 9th Division returned with 788 men yet only 138 were original members. Petersen says longer-serving soldiers should go home first, citing unit fairness and retaliation concerns. His views are echoed by Sgt. John Griest who served 11 months in Vietnam and remains with the 3rd Battalion.
