Veterans Pension Plan Faces Hurdles in 1960s Proposal

The House Veterans Committee backs a sweeping pension and compensation program that could cost up to 148 billion dollars. It would grant 150 dollars a month to veterans of World War I II or Korea who reach 63, plus 20 percent for overseas service, with automatic payments. Opponents cite a Bradley commission finding against a broad pension, while Eisenhower favored increased disability benefits. The plan faces Senate opposition and potential trimming under veteran pressure in a election year.
