Citizen Soldiers Wind Up Training
Washington AP reports the Selected Reserve Force SRF finishes its summer training and faces rugged readiness tests. The National Guard Bureau predicts 85 to 90 percent of major units will pass. The SRF was created after Defense Secretary McNamara downsized the old Army Reserve and National Guard to a 150,000-man ready force. Units can move with seven days notice from armories to mobilization stations. Shortcomings include rifle shortages and earlier uniform gaps, now partly solved by a special airlift.

The SRF faces a key challenge in scaling to battalion size for field operations using the M1 rifle. A few units failed larger unit tests, requiring home training at 724 drills per year, while passing units move to 58 drills. The guard bureau expects all SRF units to qualify for 68 drills by Nov 1, with a longer goal of reinforcing regulars after two more months of full-time training.
