Southern Group to Sign Coal Pact Today
The Southern group prepares to sign a coal pact today while remaining aloof after the split from the Northern operators last December. If they do not participate, they risk repeating last year’s situation and being invited to a national contract they did not help negotiate, affecting coal and steel consumers.
Hunger Wage Bill Sparks Taft Forecast On Coal Prices
Senator Taft predicts coal prices would rise with the wage bill and miners eyes. Reported price hikes range from 1.10 to 1.25 per ton amid contract terms pledging 409,000 miners to work only when able and willing. The measure supposedly outflanks parts of the Taft-Hartley Act by allowing stoppages without violating the ban on unfair labor actions.
