PA Farm Column Highlights War Impact On Agriculture

Pennsylvania agriculture secretary Miles Horst outlines manpower shortages, machinery scarcities, and price ceilings affecting farm production. He notes farmers and hired help laboring longer hours, with expectations of increased wartime labor needs and benefits from extension services. Machinery shortfalls include tractors, cultivators, and coming needs for corn harvest gear. He warns higher seed and feed costs as dairymen and poultrymen compete with new growers for grain, while crop acreage for beans, tomatoes, and sweet corn rises in 1943. The War Board reports sale of surplus depot equipment to farmers and disposal of hay rakes and small tractors, aiding wartime farm operations.
