United Press reports mid-summer storms across New York state triggered deadly floods. Many lowland homes inundated while highways and rail lines blocked. at least four deaths confirmed with others drowned or missing. Cornell University and towns from Ithaca to Ontario faced widespread damage as trains stalled and cottages washed away.
Harrisburg July 8 proclamation fixes August 1 to October 21 as the second motor vehicle inspection period for Pennsylvania. The proclamation, issued by Governor Earle, sets the fine for compulsory re inspection of all cars and trucks. The prior period began under former Gov Pinchot and the usual second period would start July 1.

United Press dispatch from Pittsburgh reports 16 year old Karl Pahl left home on Saturday claiming he would seek a job. He later jumped into the Allegheny River and drowned after leaving a note stating he was blamed for everything at home and could not cope with his father or mother.
Philadelphia July 8 The board of education will absorb $12,000 more in ice cream costs next year while prices at cafeterias stay at five cents per portion. The lowest bid was 20 cents per quart, two cents higher than last year.
President Roosevelt plans a Pacific coast trip after Congress adjourns if sessions end early. A Milwaukee stop is tentatively set for August 23 during the Young Democratic Clubs of America convention. The trip hinges on Congress. possible stops include San Diego Exposition, Boulder Dam, national parks, and a return by warship via the Panama Canal.

The Golden Rule Club urged immediate construction of an intercepting storm sewer after last night’s downpour flooded basements and exposed the city’s inadequate sewer system. President Crayford M. Woods announced petitions would circulate for hundreds of signatures from property owners harmed by the storm.
Health authorities in North Carolina and federal agencies rushed to contain an infantile paralysis outbreak hitting the mid state and moving into Virginia. Over the weekend two deaths were reported and 10 new cases, bringing fatalities since May 1 to 18 and total afflicted to 312. Emergency rules barring children from public gatherings were ordered by many localities as rural schools face postponement next week.
Kansas City July 8 Ozark gangster Richetti once tied to Pretty Boy Floyd made a suicide attempt in his death row cell. He climbed from his bunk and leaped to a concrete floor then beat his head against his cell bars. Guards intervened and restrained him. Doctors said injuries were not serious.
In Long Beach California on July 8 five armed men boarded the gambling ship Monte Carlo at 5 am, forced crew to open the safe, and escaped with eight two thousand dollars. Disguised with stockings over their heads, the pirates fled in a white power boat. Ed V Tanner owner said the crew included several husky runners and the ship had been crowded with gamblers earlier.
Torrential rains hail and lightning caused thousands in damage across Corry and nearby districts. Basements and cellars in business districts and homes flooded from inches to over two feet while crops were torn and gardens washed away. Severe storms extended to Lovell’s Station Lottsville Bear Lake and French Creek Clymer with a near casualty lightning strike at Mark’s Corners. Stores and municipal buildings suffered extensive water damage as sewer systems overloaded. Continued report expected on page seven.
Special to the Journal reports a cyclonic storm with hail and heavy winds causing extensive damage. Farms at Roy Perkins, B. Cornish and Fern Morton suffered major crop losses and roof damage along the flat road between Bear Lake and Lottsville. Bear Lake area saw torrential rain with electrical disturbance and crop damage.
In French Creek on July 8 Glimver Tressler a 62 year old farmer of Mark's Corners escaped as the ceiling in his bedroom collapsed during a severe storm. The house and barn were destroyed by fire sparked by the lightning. He woke just in time to flee the blaze. The fire department responded, but the home and most belongings were destroyed.
In the third storm in as many days, Hooversville suffered severe damage as a cloudburst washed out railroad tracks and highways, collapsed a three story brick business building, and left half the town without water or electricity. The Lutheran church was saved by sandbags, while gardens and telephone service were ruined.
Rain and washouts along the Binghanton Elmira corridor halted Erie Railroad service delaying a special Corry to Cleveland All Star game train. About fifteen hundred fans faced an hour or more extra travel time as the No 5 train from Corry was delayed and reorganized.
